Journal of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Now Full Open Access

The Journal of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine is now full open access!

Amsterdam, January 17, 2023 – The Journal of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine (JPRM), published by IOS Press, is pleased to announce that as of January 1, 2023, JPRM transitioned to a full Open Access publication. This means that all articles submitted and accepted after that date are immediately and permanently available upon publication for readers to freely read, download, share, and reuse (with attribution). This enables authors to comply more easily with funder and institutional mandates, for example from the National Institutes of Health.

“When JPRM was founded 15 years ago by a legendary, bold, and insightful pediatric rehabilitation specialist, Dr. Jacob Alan Neufeld, he envisioned a publication with worldwide distribution that would become ‘the’ journal in our field,” explained current Editor-in-Chief Elaine L. Pico, MD, FAAP, FAAPM&R, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, California, USA. “I am proud to say that Dr. Neufeld’s vision has been fulfilled. And we are extremely happy to support the next step in the journal’s evolution: migration to a fully open access publication model.”

JPRM is now recognized as the most influential journal in the world devoted to pediatric rehabilitation and developmental medicine throughout the lifespan (children, adolescents, adults). In recent years the number of papers published in JPRM has steadily increased as has the number of articles published as open access. In addition to authors opting to publish without a paywall, many articles have been made openly available as a service to the pediatric rehabilitation community. These include 20 spina bifida guidelines issued by the Spina Bifida Association and a special collection of articles on how COVID-19 is impacting patients. The transition to fully open content will increase the journal’s impact and benefit the entire community, including authors, readers, libraries, hospitals, funding agencies – and ultimately patients.

The associated Open Access fee has been set to be extremely competitive. The fee will not apply to certain publication types, like invited articles, editorials, and commentaries. Fees may be waived under certain circumstances, particularly from authors located in low-income countries upon application from the authors.

“We at JPRM are excited to be joining these efforts. With open access, we can reach more researchers, more clinicians, and more families, and we can thus make a positive impact worldwide on the care of children with rehabilitation needs throughout their lifespans,” added Dr. Pico.

“The migration of one of our journals to full Open Access is very exciting for us at IOS Press,” noted Publisher Gabriela Ricci. “We are supportive of exploring new options facilitated by an evolving open access publishing landscape and meeting the growing expectations related to open access. JPRM joins our expanding portfolio of open content journals and books.”

Instructions for authors who wish to submit an article to JPRM can be found here.
